Write Write

Write Write

In January 2013, I made several life altering discoveries and decisions. In 2012, my goal was self-growth. In 2013, my goal and motto has been self-discovery and non-judgment of others.

I took Leah Shapiro’s Unleash Yourself course, which teaches you to appreciate life and release fear. I felt far behind in the class because everything felt wrong in the pit of my stomach. When Leah asked me what I wanted to do, I said, “I want to sing. I want to write. I want to read.” I knew all along that my concern was supporting myself and my daughter while I went out on this “wild” self-journey.

I started reading writing books and making time in my schedule to read more. I knew I had read over 40 books in 2012. (Yay, GoodReads.) I set a goal to read 100 in 2013. (My To-Read list is over 800 books right now and more keep coming out!)

on writing

One of the first writing books I picked up was Stephen King’s On Writing. I have always loved his fiction, and I was very pleased with his instruction in this book as well. I had heard the advice that I should set a daily writing goal, but I took it to heart after reading On Writing.  1000 words a day didn’t seem like much.

Until I tried to start putting 1000 words down on paper.

I struggled. I also got in a nasty habit of bouncing from project to project and not getting much traction. I had a little despair thinking I can’t possibly physically keep up with all the ideas flowing out, much less write the novels. It was very frustrating. I finally mapped out a basic outline and dictated some dialog for the five future projects and set hard and fast to getting the latest one out on the page, even if it was an ugly first draft.

I changed my writing goal to 800 words a day. After 4 weeks of writing everyday and sometimes only getting out 200-300 words, I finally started surprising myself with the word counts I was getting. I’d set my timer for 20 minutes and when I finished, I’d think maybe that was 400 words, hopefully. Then I’d see that it was 800 words. I’ve been very pleased with some 1300-1400 word days.

Great article! I read his book years ago and it really was a different approach that I could relate to. Another one I read was Pen on Fire. I loved that one too! Thank you for shraing your journey. Gives all of as writer wannabes hope!

    • Thanks for the great tip Taryn. I just ordered Pen on Fire. I hadn’t heard of it before.
